Reading at Mary Elliot Academy

This term, our pathways have taken part in some exciting learning opportunities and community experiences to develop their skills in Reading. Students across the school have been engaging in activities that build communication, independence, and a love for reading, both in school and beyond.

Sensory Stories – Aspire Pathway

Students in the Aspire Pathway have been exploring sensory stories designed to develop their understanding of objects, pictures, and symbols. These sessions support communication skills and help students make meaningful connections through interactive storytelling.

Out in the Community – Venture Pathway

Learners in the Venture Pathway have been practising their independence by using public transport to visit the local library. They enjoyed choosing books, reading in the library space, and building confidence while travelling in the community.

Reading for Purpose – Endeavour Pathway

The Endeavour Pathway has focused on developing purposeful reading skills. Students have been using their core boards to support understanding as they practise reading in real-life contexts, building both literacy and communication.

Internal Work Experience – School Library

Post-16 students have been busy transforming the school’s new library area as part of their internal work experience. They have sorted and categorised books, arranged shelves, and created a calm, welcoming environment for everyone to enjoy. Their hard work has helped turn the space into a relaxing corner perfect for reading.
